Greetings, and thank you for considering me as your wedding photographer. As a wedding photographer in Newmarket I have the privilege of meeting and photographing many couples each and every year. When a couple books me as their wedding photographer, it’s very rare they opt out of shooting an engagement session.
For many couples, their engagement session is their first opportunity to have professional portraits taken together. So, it’s not uncommon for the newly engaged to ask us a plethora questions. We love questions! To help you plan for your engagement session I have compiled a list of frequently asked questions I hear from our brides when booking their engagement session.
What Should I Wear for my Engagement Session?
Couples are, of course, encouraged to wear outfits that fit their personal taste. However, consideration should be given to coordination of colors. If the bride, for example, is planning to wear a dress with blue and yellow patterns we would encourage the groom to wear a blue shirt that fits his personal taste. Couples are also encouraged to bring along a change of clothes to add variety to the shoot. The colors of the second set of clothes should complement the first set so that the entire shoot is visually consistent and flows well. Accessories are welcome in all forms. We like to highlight unique accessories in our shoots, so feel free to bring along anything you wish to use.
I’m Thinking of Tanning Before the Shoot and Having My Makeup Professionally Applied. Good Idea or Not?
Professional makeup may sound off-putting to some, especially the groom, however the camera loves a matte look and professional makeup comes out looking great on camera. However, the goal of the engagement session is always to capture the personality and character of the couple. Be careful when tanning in preparation for a shoot. Some self-tanning lotions need time to be absorbed into the skin. If you want a little more color for the shoot apply a self-tanner at least two to three days beforehand. The last think you want is to look orange in all of your photographs.
Are Props a Good Idea?
Props are a great way to put the personality of the couple center stage and are perfect for engagement photos. As long as the prop holds meaning for the couple, or help tell a story that’s all that matters!
I’m Not Comfortable In Front of the Camera. What Advice Can You Give?
The best advice is to have fun. Take advantage of your time together and relax. Stare into each other’s eyes, hold hands, and try your best to forget we’re there. If we need something specific we’ll let you know, but otherwise we just want to capture photos of you being candid. The best photos are the ones where you forgot a camera was even in the room.
What Is the Best Location for My Engagement Session?
The best location for engagement photos is a location that has some meaning to you. It can be the park you walk through on a regular basis or even in the comfort of your own backyard. No need to worry if you don’t have a location in mind, we’re more than happy to suggest engagement session locations that compliment your personality and style.
