Newmarket Wedding Photographers Present: The 3 Biggest Engagement Session Mistakes to Avoid

Congratulations you’re engaged. Today we’re discussing engagement photography and my top three things you should avoid when scheduling your shoot.

The natural Instinct for most of my couples is to run out to the mall and pick out a brand new outfit for their engagement shoot. I don’t recommend doing this because you risk not liking how the outfit actually looks on you in photographs. Also, most couples aren’t really comfortable in brand new outfits as opposed to going with something that you might already have. Truth is it really doesn’t matter how well we click and how magical you and your partner are in front of the camera during the engagement session, if you don’t like the outfit, you are not going to like those photographs.

So what’s the solution? Selecting your go-to outfit. That’s the outfit that you know you look good in, you’ve been photographed in, you’re comfortable in and you love the way you look in it.

Scheduling your hair and makeup trial the morning of your engagement shoot. Bad idea for the exact same reason you don’t run out and buy a brand new outfit. Truth is there’s a good chance you’re going to change your hairstyle and your makeup style by the time you actually get to the wedding day. It’s called a makeup trial because you are trying something different and most brides tend to stray outside their comfort zone for the trial and end up scaling back their look to something a little bit more comfortable.

Now again, no matter how amazing those photographs turn out, if you’re not happy with the way your makeup looks you might as well throw these photographs in the garbage because you are not going to like them.

Choosing the wrong location and season for your engagement session. Now, this is a big one. If you’re not outdoorsy and enjoy going on hikes…trekking up to the top of the Scarborough Bluffs is probably not the best idea for your engagement session.

If you don’t like winter and can’t tolerate being outside in the cold for more than five minutes at a time…the Toronto Distillery District Christmas Market might not be the best choice for your engagement session.

So what is the solution? Well, it’s choosing a setting and a season that compliments you and your partner’s personal style and comfort level. Maybe a cozy indoor engagement session at home might be right up your alley, or a springtime engagement session at Fairy Lake in Newmarket might be a better choice.
